Where there is no vision [no revelation of God and His word], the people are unrestrained; But happy and blessed is he who keeps the law [of God].
PROVERBS 29:18 AMP
Vision can never be understood outside of the God of revelation. We emphasize the importance of degrees and learning, and while these are important, all they do is to unearth information. You amass a wealth of information through diligent search, but there is a step further: the path of understanding.
When I have invested so much time in acquiring knowledge, and I have not invested any time in understanding what I have acquired, I do myself no good. When I have understood the import of all I have learned and acquired, the crowning glory is the application of them all, which is the path of wisdom. All three - knowledge, understanding and wisdom - form the fulcrum of today's extract.
I can never know what God wants from and of me unless I take time out to study his word, know what he wants from me, understand his purpose for my life, and pursue that which I am convinced is his perfect will for me. I may know all the Scriptures by heart and be able to recite all by heart, yet they will do me good, like the Ethiopian eunuch, unless there is understanding and application. When God is absent from a life, it does not matter if the world applauds you. When there is no order, direction or guidance from God for my life, then I will lack direction, impact or purpose. Destruction is the end of such a life.
The opposite position is also clearly stated: for all who will keep the law of God, their joy will know no end because they will be directed by God himself. Faith, like vision, cannot be seen with the naked eye or touched by hand, yet you will know when it is lacking in a life. God would have me seek him and his perfect will, as this is the only way to making impact. His time of favour is here.
