Jesus replied to them, “ I am the Bread of Life. The one who comes to Me will never be hungry, and the one who believes in Me [as Savior] will never be thirsty [for that one will be sustained spiritually].
JOHN 6:35 AMP
It is easy to be deceived by man's obvious sincerity. We can pretend to be sincere, we can pretend to be serious about spiritual things. But there is a God who sees beyond the obvious into the truth. He is the one who reads hearts and motives and knows when we are pretending or when we are sincere.
Recall the background to today's extract: people had just ate bread miraculously provided and they needed a regular supply. Who wouldn't want that? So, a search for Jesus began. When the people found him, they exclaimed: "When did you get here". Someone else would have taken the pains to explain himself, but Truth will never hide. Jesus challenged them, just as he is challenging us today: " Do not labour for food that perishes".
This truth applies to all our lives. We seek out tokens of success; we seek out temporary solutions to eternal questions. We come to God expecting quick fixes and we leave disappointed, because God is not a magician. He's not interested first in your comfort but in your character. He wants to build us up to depend totally on him, not on created things like us.
He calls himself the Bread of Life. Bread sustains, it must be eaten daily if it is to sustain life. He satisfies both hunger and thirst, and sustains all through life. He is not a temporary fix; he is not an emergency application; he does not force himself into us. We must seek him out and hold on to him daily for all that we need. Our greatest need is the eternal, when that is settled, every other thing is settled. His time of favour is here.
