But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. Matthew 19:26 KJV
In today's context, we find a young man, sincerely sure of his works, but still sure that something vital was missing. He knew he was perfect by the written letter, but something deeper than that was missing. He had just heard Jesus recount the law's demands, and he was perfect. Unfortunately, for Jesus, being worthy of eternity goes beyond just keeping the letters of the law.
There is nothing more important to hold on to than God himself. Riches, possessions and provisions are means to an end, not the end in themselves. Everything I hold on to now is given to me in trust, and I must know their place and their limitations. The things man may consider vital are the things God considers as distractions. I must therefore find and pursue the things God counts as important.
No matter what life throws at me, I must not let go of the most important thing: the personal encounter with Jesus. Every other thing is given for a season; only what God gives is eternal. The rich and the poor will enter life, not because of what they own or lack, but because of who they know. Do you know the God of life? Does he know you as his own? His time of favour is here.
Lord, as I live my life from day to day, may I never forget that you are the most important possession to have. May nothing in this life distract me from that truth. Amen.
